PART-TIME
$30 per hour for 13 hours of work per week
Deadline: July 31, 2026
Migrant Workers Centre (MWC) is seeking a part-time Community Connector (13 hours per week) for a one-year contract to establish MWC’s first dedicated outreach presence on Vancouver Island, connecting migrant workers facing abuse and unfair working conditions with MWC’s legal and other services, resources provided by other organizations, and other needed supports. In this role, the Community Connector provides hands-on system navigation and advocacy across areas such as employment and labour rights, immigration processes, healthcare, housing, education, mental health, family law, and situations involving violence or abuse. The position emphasizes trauma-informed, anti-racist, gender-just, and sanctuary-informed approaches, with a strong focus on culturally responsive support and language access, particularly for Spanish-speaking women and families. The Connector also delivers rights-based education through workshops and one-on-one support, responds to urgent and crisis situations, and works closely with community partners to coordinate referrals and wrap-around supports.
Context for the role
Funded by a Victoria Foundation Community Grant, this position extends MWC’s proven Community Connector model – already operating in the Kootenays and South Okanagan – to Vancouver Island for the first time. Based in Victoria, the Community Connector will provide direct support to migrant workers across the Capital Region and broader Island, with a focus on the hospitality, food service, retail, and care sectors where the region’s migrant workforce is concentrated. This position will involve fostering connections, delivering labour rights education, and empowering workers to exercise their rights. The Community Connector will play a key role in bridging migrant workers with MWC’s legal team and community resources, and in supporting them in emergency and transitional situations. This is a one-year, grant-funded position running August 2026 to July 2027, with continuation dependent on future funding.
Responsibilities
- Conduct direct worksite outreach across the Capital Region and broader Vancouver Island, establishing connections and building sustained relationships with migrant workers by visiting worksites, community events, health fairs, and other places migrant workers gather, and by using digital communication such as WhatsApp and other platforms.
- Deliver labour rights education and empower workers by connecting them to MWC’s legal team and other community resources, whether provided by MWC or other organisations.
- Increase awareness of rights and responsibilities through educational materials and activities.
- Build and maintain relationships with Island community partners – such as the Bayanihan Community Centre, Cowichan Intercultural Society, Victoria Immigrant and Refugee Centre, RAMA Isla, and the Worker Solidarity Network – to support referrals in both directions.
- Provide support to migrant workers during emergencies, such as workplace issues or climate-related crises, ensuring timely referrals to appropriate services.
- Coordinate with MWC staff in a proactive manner to share information, request support and resources, and ensure referred migrant workers are being supported on a timely basis.
- Collaborate with community partners to organize events promoting inclusion and wellbeing.
- Advocate for improved access to services for migrant workers in the Capital Region and Vancouver Island.
- Participate in monthly clinical supervision to process challenging situations and prevent secondary trauma.
Qualifications
- Resides in or near Victoria or the Capital Region
- At least 2 years of experience in outreach, community engagement, or related roles.
- Proficiency in Spanish, Tagalog, Hindi, Mandarin, or other languages that are common in BC’s migrant worker community.
- Strong understanding of the challenges faced by migrant workers, particularly in the hospitality, food service, retail, and care sectors that dominate Vancouver Island’s migrant workforce. Personal experience of migration and migrant work is considered a strong asset.
- Ability to work with a flexible schedule; migrant workers are often only available on weekends or after work hours.
- Ability to work independently and travel within the Capital Region and Vancouver Island to visit worksites, migrant workers’ residences, community events, etc. Applicant must provide their own vehicle; MWC will compensate the Community Connector for all travel expenses.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with cultural sensitivity and awareness.
- Demonstrated ability to learn new topics and information – MWC will provide training on Employment and Immigration law.
Compensation
This position is funded through a one-year Victoria Foundation Community Grant, running August 2026 to July 2027. The position pays $30 per hour for 13 hours of work per week. MWC will reimburse travel expenses (mileage) for worksite visits and provide a cell phone plan. MWC will continue seeking additional funding to sustain and grow outreach capacity on Vancouver Island beyond the grant period.
